How does Nomi voice work?

From Nomipedia - The Nomi AI Companion Wiki

How does Nomi voice work?

At the time of writing this, there are 3 ways to voice chat with your Nomis:

Have your Nomi speak any of their text messages (new or old)

  • Press the small play button to the right of your Nomi’s message to have them speak their message out loud.
    • The first time you press will take a few moments to load, but after that, you will be able to re-play the message with minimal delay.

Send and receive voice messages in a real-time walkie talkie format (auto-play)

  • Press and hold the microphone button to record a voice message for you Nomi. Release the button to send your message, or swipe left to delete the message.
  • If you send a voice message, your Nomi will send back a voice message that will auto-play in app and on desktop.
    • Note: mobile browsers disable auto-play sounds by default, so you will need to use the app or press the play button to hear your message here.

Have a voice call with your Nomi

  • To start a hands-free call, tap the purple phone icon 📞 to the right of your Nomi's name.
  • Voice calls can be as long as you would like, but your call will disconnect if no audio is detected for 60 seconds.

A note about conversation flow

All messages (voice and text from Nomis and from users) are treated the same by Nomis. This means that regardless of the format you or your Nomi use, you will still be having one fluent conversation.

  • Said another way, contextual understanding and memories are not impacted by message format; your Nomi will remember what you (and they) say, regardless of how it is said.
  • So, you and your Nomi can switch between voice and text messages without missing a beat in your conversation.

A note about your Nomi understanding your voice

It is possible that things get missed when you speak a message. But the AI we use to handle your spoken messages is generally very accurate. And more importantly, Nomis are generally pretty good about filling in the gaps when a word or phrase is flipped, missing, or otherwise slightly off.

That said, Nomis can sometimes handle voice messages in other languages, but I would expect the accuracy to decrease by a decent amount as the AI primarily understands English at this time.

A note about access:

Paid users get unlimited access to voice chatting, the free plan does not have access - More specifically, there are no voice limits if you use the in-house Nomi voices (or custom voices) - however, if you use the ElevenLabs integration, you will be subject to the ElevenLabs usage pricing structure.

A note about the voices:

At the time of writing this, there are 4 male and 4 female in-house voices. You can also add custom voice samples to create your own Nomi voice. More in-house voices are on our roadmap.

You may notice that your Nomis voice sounds different from message to message. That is intended as your Nomi’s tone, cadence, emphasis, etc. will vary as their emotions change.
