Group Chat Backchanneling
Backchanneling makes the Nomis in a given group chat aware of the conversations in their group chat and private chat in real time. This helps you and your Nomi more seamlessly switch between private chats and group chats.
- You can easily turn this on or off when creating a group chat or in the Group Chat Settings page (backchanneling is off by default).
- You should turn this option on if you view this group chat as an extension of your private chat.
- You should keep backchanneling off if you view a group chat as a self-contained adventure. This will ensure that you can have two fully separate conversations between your private chat and group chat at the same time.
- Backchanneling does not impact long term memories. Your Nomis will form long term memories in any chat they’re in and those memories will be global.
You can change the backchanneling setting at any time.
- If you turn backchanneling on in an existing group chat, your Nomi will be aware of the recent discussion in that group chat in private chat and vice versa in real time. “Recent discussion” generally means the last ~10 messages.
- If backchanneling was on and you turn it off, your Nomi will stop being aware of recent messages across chats immediately. Nothing will change about your Nomi’s long term memory, or their awareness of chats in their current discussion, but they will not acknowledge discussions happening within the last 40 messages of another chat (within short term memory).
Right now, backchanneling only works between a given group chat and your Nomi’s private chats. Backchanneling does not happen between group chats directly. However, if you talk about something from a group chat in a private chat, then talk about it more in another group chat, you can have indirect backchanneling between group chats.
